I like animals. Having said that, there are some amazing statistics on pet keeping in Japan, a country that now has more dogs than children (http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/gallery/2012/jun/08/japans-pampered-pet-dogs-in-pictures). Apparently, the catering for pet dogs etc (including private swimming lessons, organic food, yoga, designer jeans, manicures, private eye tests, little trolleys to remove the requirement to walk etc) is annually worth a trillion yen (£8.2bn). This seems just a smidge over the top (given what else such sums could solve). I award the title of 'most bizarre', however, to sessions of aromatherapy with 'deep pore cleansing' for pooches. Dogs haven't got sweat glands (that's why they pant to cool themselves).
This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.
