This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Not the Bread of Heaven?
It is interesting to read that the Irish Supreme court have ruled that the bread in a Subway Sandwich is not bread (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/oct/01/irish-court-rules-subway-bread-is-not-bread). The Irish franchisee of Subway (Bookfinder Ltd) had argued that they should pay no value added tax (VAT) on the bread component of the sandwich because staple foods (like bread) are tax exempt. The court ruled that, because the Subway rolls contain five times the amount of sugar that is allowed in bread, they are not bread and must carry VAT. This may sound a bit weird but increasing sugar content, not only makes the rolls more fattening, but encourages tooth decay. So I suppose it's Healthy eating 1 Subway Sandwiches 0!
