What's In a Critter's Name? 66. Rabbit

The French called what's now the rabbit, 'conil', coming from the Latin 'cuniculus'. This became 'coney'. Young coneys were called 'rabbits'. Eventually, rabbit became the popular term for all coney, whether young or adult.
