News that Elon Musk's Boring Company have apparently made a 'killing' selling 20,000 flame throwers (described, for legal cosmetic purposes, as 'Not-a-flame-thrower') just seems incredible (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/jun/10/a-great-item-to-have-flamethrowers-sell-like-hot-cakes-at-elon-musk-sale). People, apparently want them to ignite bonfires as well as to toast sandwiches and marshmallows. All this in a tinder-dry location with problematic wild fires! Even if these items are never used in criminal activities (a big assumption), the use of these devices in any of the above legal senses is a) prone to accidents; b) distinctly energy wasteful and c) going to intensify 'greenhouse' gas release.
This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.
