Record numbers of 'mutilated' dolphin carcasses have been washing up on French beaches (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/mar/31/mutilated-dolphins-wash-up-on-french-coast-in-record-numbers). A likely scenario is that they get caught and drowned in nets suspended between pairs of fishing boats. Although they would be wounded by desperate attempts to escape, it is also possible that irritated fishermen may slash the bodies in an attempt to sink them.
This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues.
