Bankers and Farmers?

Guy Singh-Watson reiterates the truism, that the climate crisis is making life financially precarious for UK farmers. They have to manage weather extremes (of which there will be more), to give a crop any chance of approaching its maximal theoretical yield. Farmer's margins, he also argues, are now too small to leave anything 'in the bank' to pay for bad years. Singh-Watson opines that, if UK farms were run by bankers, they would undoubtedly cut their losses and give up. He points out, however, that many farmers don't feel they have this option, being 'emotionally invested' in their activity. He suggests that most bankers wouldn't be very good at growing potatoes (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/may/08/british-farmer-food-climate-crisis-business). Singh-Watson points out, tha, most profits from UK food sales, currently go to supermarkets. There's a real danger, that the climate crisis, will make UK farming unsustainable. If that's the case, food security will be imperiled. There clearly needs to be major financial adjustments, to ensure UK farming's continued viability.
