One certainly shouldn't call Herring gulls 'seagulls'. Gulls are not restricted to the sea. These birds are opportunistic scavengers, just as much at home on an inland landfill site as in a fishing harbour. Reports in newspapers about ‘gull muggings’ in locations like Scarborough (Yorkshire), are basically misinterpretations. Gulls have no concept of ownership. Food items are there to be competed for. They are not stealing your chip or pastie. They are just getting their beaks on it first.
This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.
