Cardiff has become the first UK city to increase its parking charges for heavy cars (more than 2400 kg when fully-laden). The description particularly applies to so-called 'Sports Utility Vehicles'. SUVs take up more space than traditional cars. They also cause more damage to road surfaces. These status symbols also generate more pollution via exhaust emissions, braking systems and tyres. SUVs are also more likely to kill or maim other road users. It's likely that the Welsh car lobby won't like any curtailing of their 'freedoms' (they were incensed by the 20mph limit in built up areas).
This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.
