The Hawaiian island's location, in the mid-Pacific, makes them very vulnerable to tsunamis ('harbour waves'). Distant earthquakes (in places like Russia), can trigger these destructive phenomena. Fortunately, these waves can be predicted and folk encouraged to move quickly to higher ground.
