This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

New Boilers For Old?
Home heating generates 14% of carbon emissions in the UK. This is a consequence of most properties being heated by gas boilers. Gas boilers are will be banned from new-build homes from 2025 and the aim is to phase them out entirely, by the 2030s. The Heat Wayv is the first microwave-powered unit, intended for home heating (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/mar/16/first-microwave-powered-home-boiler-could-help-cut-emissions). The Heat Wayv Unit is about the same size as a gas boiler. It contains, however, 10m of tubing, where microwaves heat water at several points. The unit might well have advantages over heat pumps in some types of property.
