This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Folk in the UK Don't Know What They Are Eating?
Professor Chris Elliot (Queen's University Belfast) maintains the UK is now at high risk of further food scandals (like the horsemeat for beef fiasco) (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/apr/16/uk-at-risk-of-food-safety-expert-warns). The increased risk of folk, in the UK, purchasing 'dodgy' foods is due to a number of factors. It's partially because, post-Brexit, the UK no longer has membership of or gets intelligence briefings from the EU Agri-Food Fraud Network (FFN). The FFN deals with cross-border movement of contaminated and/or mislabelled foods. The UK also has no access to the EU's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed. Many routine checks are carried out on foods imported (to the EU and the UK) from 'third countries', in the port of Rotterdam (Netherlands). The UK's food fraud risk, is further compounded by the slashing English Public Health budgets. Food descriptions and product safety are now rarely checked. 'You are, what you eat'.
