This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself
UK beavers were hunted to extinction around 400 years ago. In recent times, this rodent has been selectively reintroduced to parts of England and Scotland. Beavers have beneficial influences on water flow and wild life in natural environments. A first wild beaver has now been detected in Wales (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/apr/12/first-wild-beaver-in-wales-in-400-years-caught-felling-trees-in-garden). A Pembrokeshire couple wondered what was destroying the trees in their garden. They eventually installed a stealth camera, to record who was wielding the machete. They were amazed to see footage of a beaver, swimming in their garden pond, using its incisors to cut down 'their' trees. The mystery is how this animal got there. It doesn't seem to have escaped from any reintroduction programme. Luckily, the couple seem very tolerant of their self-invited guest and are keeping the location secret.
