This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Dragging the Days Out?
Climate change is increasing the length of the Earth's day. Melting of the Greenland and Antarctic icesheets, redistributes water from high latitudes, to the equator. This, consequently, makes the Earth fatter. Rotation is therefore slowed, lengthening each day (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/jul/15/climate-crisis-making-days-longer-study). Day length only increases by milliseconds. This is, however, sufficient to disrupt internet traffic; electronic financial transactions and GPS navigation. All three, depend on precise timing. Amazing what humans can do to their planet!
