This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Potamii?
It's a strange sort of legacy. Drug overlord Pablo Escobar, illegally (naturally) imported a number of Hippopotamus for his private, home zoo (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/feb/10/pablo-escobars-hippos-must-be-culled-to-halt-biodiversity-disaster-scientists). On Escobar's death, it was judged too dangerous (the animal kills lots of people in its native Africa and members of his cartel could have remained in the area), to remove the hippos. Hippopotamus numbers have grown on the estate to between 65 and 80 animals. Scientists are now warning that these beasts (hungry vegetarians), will endanger the natural Ecology of Columbia (that was true when they were illegally imported). Yet another 'natural' disaster to worry the people of this South American country?
