This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

War of the World
The human species seems very easy to distract. We have the pressing survival problem of anthropogenic climate change. Far from focusing on this, our species currently seems to be rushing off to war with itself. There's spreading conflict in the Middle East, as well as in Sudan and Ukraine (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/15/israel-will-respond-to-iran-missile-attack-idf-chief-of-staff). War, of course, means massive increases in the burning of fossil fuels to run machinery (tanks; jet planes etc.), increased production of armaments (missiles; shells; drones etc.), not to mention explosions with resulting fires. Even attempts to limit the conflicts add to the 'carbon footprint'. Diplomats and politicians, as well as armies, criss-cross the globe. Global institutions repeatedly gather to agonise about issues. These all add to the climate crisis. An alien observer might think Homo sapiens is a totally misnamed species ('sapiens' means 'wise')! Humans actually seem profoundly self-destructive?
