What's In a Critter's Name? 1. Red admiral

The Red admiral is a wide-ranging butterfly, found in the UK (Vanessa atalanta) and India (Vanessa indica). Its name has nothing to do with ships and the navy. It's actually a contraction of the earlier English name, 'Red admirable'.
