This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

A 'Green' President?
The current US President claimed the moral high-ground when talking about climate change and global heating. At the Glasgow Cop meeting, for example, he promised to 'slash' methane emissions. Methane is an even more potent 'greenhouse gas' than carbon dioxide. This gas is not, however, only belched by cattle. Methane is inevitably released by the extraction of oil and gas, as well as from melting tundra. In spite of his promise to be a leader on environmental issues, this President has signed more drilling leases than his climate-change denying predecessor. He has now given the green light to the Willow Development (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/mar/14/biden-president-approved-alaska-willow-project). The Willow Development is scheduled to be built on the remote tundra of Alaska's Northern Arctic coast. It will consist of 200 oil wells, several new pipelines, a processing plant, an airport (yet more emissions) and a gravel mine. This development may be attractive in terms of US energy self-sufficiency. It sends, however, a dispiriting message to the rest of the world. The Willow Development simply confirms that the US is still not serious about countering climate change. Greed and profits always seem to 'trump' the environment. Green he 'aint!
