This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Eating Heating Our Planet?
A Columbia University study claims that "sustaining the pattern (of food production) we have today is not consistent with a climate-safe future" (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/mar/06/meat-dairy-rice-high-methane-food-production-bust-climate-target-study). This study found that 'high methane foods' alone, could push the Earth past the (alledgedly 'safe') 1.5 degrees Centigrade (above pre-Industrial levels) limit, agreed at the Paris COP Meeting. Three quarters of food-related climate heating, is generated by methane emissions from ruminant stock (mainly cattle kept for meat and dairy products) and paddy fields for rice growing. Paddy fields act like methane-producing swamps. The Columbia study suggests a 55% reduction in temperature rise, could be achieved by reducing meat consumption in rich countries to medically-recommended levels. It seems like a 'no-brainer', to improve your health whilst saving the planet. However, getting rich folk to curb their food intakes, won't be an easy sell. People are constantly bombarded with messages to eat more.
