This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Lacking Any 'Bottle'?
The UK government appear set to block Scotland's proposed bottle recycling scheme (https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/mar/13/uk-government-poised-to-block-scottish-bottle-recycling-scheme). Scotland's scheme was agreed in their parliament but has not enthusiastically embraced by any of the three candidates for leadership of the Scottish National Party. The scheme would involve adding 20 pence to the price of any single-use bottle or can. Purchasers, would subsequently be able to reclaim this deposit, by returning containers for recycling. Machines have been planed to help this process. The UK government can issue 'trade exemptions', allowing prices for goods to deviate in Scotland and England/Wales. The UK minister involved appears determined not to issue a trade exemption. If this is the case, the government needs to put in place a UK-wide recycling scheme. Or are they simply too much in hock to the brewing and food industries?
