This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Using One Emergency to Intensify Another?
Hucksters will use any old argument to boost their profits. The US rush for Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) has been 'sold' as being a necessary response to the war in Ukraine. The argument has been that LNG is needed to replace the gas and oil formerly obtained from Russia. LNG plants have consequently sprung up all along the US's fragile Gulf Coast (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/mar/20/ukraine-is-a-false-justification-americas-destructive-new-rush-for-natural-gas). This rush for natural gas, damages the health of human populations living in that region. The gas extraction also wrecks fragile local ecosystems. Each site where LNG is produced, adds to the release of methane, a powerful 'greenhouse gas'. LNG will also be transported globally to Europe and elsewhere, adding yet more emissions. The war in Ukraine should actually been used to focus American attention on non-carbon alternatives to coal, oil and gas. Solar, wind and water power should have been massively expanded. This US LNG 'explosion' is a damaging distraction from the urgent need for all nations to tackle the climate crisis.
