This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Any Scientist Could Have/Would Have Told Him So!
At the height of the Covid19 pandemic, the current UK PM, when chancellor, spent millions of pounds of public money on his pet 'Eat Out to Help Out' scheme. Participants got up to 50% off their restaurant bills. The, then chancellor, was much featured, in the media, 'serving' customers, in a Japanese restaurant. The, now PM, boasted his scheme saved millions of jobs (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/jun/03/sunak-under-fire-as-stupid-eat-out-to-help-out-scheme-to-be-focus-of-covid-inquiry). Unremarkably, it's been subsequently demonstrated that 'Eat Out to Help Out', mainly 'helped out' viral transmission. Who would have guessed? One scientist has described this scheme as 'spectacularly stupid'. Any halfway competent scientist would have told the, then chancellor, this. It simply confirms that the UK government's claim to have 'followed the science', was a complete fiction.
