This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

No Sun Beds on the Med?
The prognosis for Mediterranean holidays doesn't look good. The Mediterranean basin is a global heating hotspot. Our world is currently 1.1 degrees Centigrade hotter than in the 1970s. The basin is, however, aleady 1.5 degrees hotter and on course for a 3 degree rise by the end of the century (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jun/03/fires-floods-and-disappearing-beaches-can-mediterranean-holidays-survive). Rainfall in the Mediterranean basin is also estimated to plunge by between 10 and 60%. The elevated temperatures and reduced rainfall, will increase violent storms and wildfires. Sealevel rises will be between 35 and 100 cm, wiping out most of the sandy beaches. It doesn't sound a good place to holiday?
