This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

FIFA 10: Environment 0
The aptly-named, Commission for Loyalty regulates advertising in Switzerland. It has ruled that FIFA (also based in Switzerland), broke competition rules, in claiming its Qatar-based competition, would be the "first carbon neutral World Cup" (https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/jun/07/fifa-carbon-neutral-qatar-world-cup-misled-fans-swiss-regulator). FIFA's claim was always blatant nonsense. Enormous new stadia were constructed for the Qatar event. Lots of workers were flown in to do this. The emissions generated, could never be offset, by creating gardens around the venues! The emissions generated by flying teams, their support staff, fans, FIFA officials and media to Qatar were also massive. They have to be included in any 'carbon footprint' calculation. There's been no attempt to offset these emissions. FIFA's "first carbon neutral World Cup" claim must be the most blatant (and stupid?) on record. I don't think, however, Commission for Loyalty's conclusion that fans could have been 'misled', applied to many folk. We have to recognise that International sporting events can never be 'carbon neutral'. FIFA's claim was simply 'drive-by greenwash'!
