This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

'High' Tide on England's South Coast
It's not only raw sewage, going into the coastal waters of the South of England! Portsmouth and Brunel University London have analysed numerous water samples taken across Chichester and Longstone harbours (Kent). They found high levels of potentially dangerous chemicals, including recreational drugs, antidepressants and pesticides (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jun/09/high-levels-drugs-water-pollution-study-england-south-coast). Environmentalists are concerned about the possible effects of some these chemicals on marine life. For example, it's well-established that oestrogens (in contraceptive pills) can feminise male fish. There's obviously much scope for evaluating possibilities in this area.
