This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

'Chelsea Tractor' tax?
Ultra-heavy, SUVs have been dubbed 'Chelsea tractors', as some are used in well-heeled city areas for the school run. Fairly obviously, such vehicles are not required for this type of task. It's now been demonstrated that current SUVs emit more climate-damaging gas than conventionally-engined cars, purchased in 2013. Using the 'polluter should pay principle', the campaign group, Possible, argue that SUV drivers should be subject to much heavier taxation (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/oct/16/suvs-emit-more-climate-damaging-gas-than-older-cars-do-study-finds). Possible maintain that rich folk, choosing to drive an SUV in the city, can afford to pay extra for the 'privilage'. The money could be used to improve public transport for the masses?
