This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

'Ed Chilli Breeder
The spiciness of chillis on the Scoville scale, is determined by their capsaicin content. For 10 years, the spiciest chilli was the Carolina Reaper, with just over 1 m Scoville units. Its crown has now been taken by Pepper X, weighing in at a massive 2.69 m heat units (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/17/pepper-x-spiciest-guinness-world-records). Both the Carolina Reaper and Pepper X were bred by one Ed Currie. As someone with a slightly amusing name, it's nice to find something similar occurring in the world of plant breeding.
