This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Lulled Into a False Sense of Security?
Sheena Cruikshank (Manchester University) has noted the current UK 10% rise in hospital admissions with Covid19 infections, especially in Northern England. She reiterates that the virus is evolving (it's what viruses always do). At the same time, the country has markedly reduced its pandemic levels of monitoring and testing. Cruikshank also believes that access to vital drugs to treat infections is patchy (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/07/covid-19-uk-variants-testing-monitoring-drugs). The UK has apparently decided it can 'live with' Covid19. Greater incidences of infection, however, mean the virus is more likely to mutate into new and potentially damaging varieties. Mutations are cummulative. There's a strong possibility we have prematurely 'taken our eyes off the ball', as they say in Soccer.
