This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Going to Pot?
Cannabis extract, cannabidiol (CBD), has become a common additive in some UK high street products. These 'doctored' items range from muffins to coffee. In some countries, CBD is even found in 'energy' drinks and beers. UK Food regulators have, however, greatly reduced the designated 'safe daily dose' of this compound (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/oct/12/uk-food-regulators-slash-recommended-dose-of-cbd-over-health-risks). The reduction in the safe daily dose can be linked to evidence that CBD increases the risk of liver damage as well as changes in thyroid gland activity. Thyroid function, of course, has a powerful impact on an individual's metabolic rate, not something one wants with one's coffee!
