What's In a Critter's Name? 43. Gazelle

This name may come from the Old French 'gazel', in turn, from the Old Spanish 'gacel'. The latter, was a North African pronunciation of the Arabic 'gazal'. This has the same root as 'ghazal', meaning 'conversations with women'.
