This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

They Don't Want Lynx or Tourists?
Most farmers have very negative effects on the biodiversity, needed to keep ecological systems working. The Revolta Pagesa ('Peasant's Revolt') in Spain, is now working to block the re-introduction of wolves, bears and lynx to their areas. This is especially sad in the case of the Ibernian lynx, that's been making a come-back from the brink of extinction. Farmer's and hunters apparently don't want releases of lynx into areas, currently over-run by rabbits. This is in spite of 90% of the lynx's diet consisting of rabbits. They would prefer the rabbits to be killed with aluminium phosphate. Hunters and farmers don't want the lynx because they say 'they will attract more tourism but it's not worth it for the impact it has on our way of life' (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/mar/03/spain-iberian-lynx-rewilding-lobbying-hunters-farmers). Right wing politicians appear to be using any issue to roll back on attempts to protect anthropogenically damaged environments. They appear happy, to have rampant climate change and severely impoverished natural environments, so long as it gets them votes. I suspect they won't be first in line, to deal with the consequences. Folk insisting on their 'way of life' appear to be a consistent problem, when changes are needed.
