This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Eco-friendly Mini Vacuum Cleaners
Current wastewater treatment plants don't remove all the drug, pesticide and industrial chemical contaminants, before discharge. It's been suggested that a tiny, freshwater crustacean could do the final clean. Daphnia or 'Water fleas' filter out (like little vacuum cleaners) wastewater contaminants (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/sep/26/scientists-use-water-fleas-to-filter-pollutants-out-of-wastewater). It's suggested that Water fleas could provide an ecofriendly, low cost solution for wastewater purification. Daphnia could also be especially useful, in filtering out microplastics. These organisms could, of course, only be used to treat freshwater. There are, however, many marine filter feeders that might be used in a similar way for salt water.
