Sugar Rush

Following successful trials, the UK's National Health Service is to offer the chance for thousands of patients (children and adults), with type 1 diabetes, to be fitted with an 'artificial pancreas'. The artificial pancreas is basically an insulin pump that adjusts its dosage in response to blood sugar levels (https://www.england.nhs.uk/2024/04/nhs-rolls-out-artificial-pancreas-in-world-first-move/). Although the device won't suit everyone, it will greatly reduce the need for daily self-administered injection of hormone. Where fitted, it should also result in a much closer control of blood glucose levels. It will also reduce the need to worry about the use of needles. Fitting all the suitable folk with an artificial panceas will, however, take several years.
