A study, carried out by Edinburgh University, has examined echograms of the heart from 1,200 patients collected from 69 countries, who had apparently 'recovered' from a Covid-19 infection (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2020/jul/13/heart-scans-of-covid-19-patients-show-range-of-abnormalities). None of the subjects had had known heart disease before they had been infected by the virus. A remarkable 55% of the sample showed evidence of damage to the heart, most commonly involving the ventricles (the major pumping receptacles in that organ). Although the heart damage was generally minor, around 14% showed substantial abnormalities. A small number of the sample even experienced coronaries ('heart attacks'). This is yet more evidence that Covid-19 creates lasting health problems, by damaging the circulatory systems of many of its victims.
This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.
