A reintroduction programme for the Pine marten, an animal hunted to extinction in England, is showing its first signs of success (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/jul/13/first-signs-of-success-in-bid-to-reintroduce-pine-martens-to-england). 18 radio-tracked animals were moved from Scotland to the Forest of Dean (Gloucestershire). It appears that some of the females have now given birth to kits, confirming that the new habitat (at least initially) suits the species well. There will, of course, need to be an extended monitoring programme for these animals to ensure the population has long-term viability.
This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.
