They Don't Like Us?

There have been a number of reports of 'orchestrated' (get it?) attacks by Orcas on yachts sailing near the Straits of Gibraltar (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/sep/13/killer-whales-launch-orchestrated-attacks-on-sailing-boats). It is believed that a single pod of these (the largest members of the dolphin family) is involved. These unusual events have reportedly involved a number of animals repeatedly ramming the sailing boats for extended periods of time. Boats have been spun around and damage has been caused to a number of them, especially to their rudders. It is difficult to know why this previously unrecorded behaviour is occurring. The pod may have had an encounter with a sailing boat that damaged or even killed one of their number (they are intelligent animals and it's not impoosible that they could harbour a 'grudge'). Another possibility is that they are short of food and are just exploring the possibilities. Finally, they might simply enjoy the 'sport'.

Food For Thought?
