This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Ecofriendly Supermarkets?
The concept of an 'ecofriendly' supermarket is a bit debatable. The magazine, Which?, has, however, ranked UK supermarkets on their plastic and food waste (important to shoppers) as well as their 'greenhouse gas' emissions (important to climate scientists). The top ranked stores were Waitrose and Lidl (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/feb/04/waitrose-lidl-eco-friendly-supermarkets-which-plastic-waste). It's interesting that one upmarket chain and an economy brand have emerged in the top spot. Which? clearly think that the importance of environmental issues to shoppers will influence their food purchasing behaviour. They suggest that their rankings will provide an impetus for other chains to improve their environmental credentials. Having said that, it is currently more than possible that growing poverty, exacerbated by by rocketing energy costs and galloping inflation, will push many people in buying the very cheapest products. These might not be in ecofriendly stores. 'Choice', even if you are worried about environmental issues, doesn't really exist on the breadline.
