This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Lies, Damn Lies and......?
Weirdly, the UK's number of new Covid infections 'jumped' to 92,000 on Monday 31st of January (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/31/spike-in-covid-cases-in-england-as-reinfections-included-for-first-time). The large leap (for mankind?) was purely down to the figure, for the first time, including reinfections in England. Prior to Monday, England, Northern Ireland and Scotland all only recorded first infections with Sars-CoV-2. Wales added reinfections to its totals, if the two tests were at least 42 days apart. Daily totals added the numbers from the four constituent nations, if they were available (i.e. not always). This is yet another indication of how unreliable official infection figures have been. Risk is surely linked to the numbers of people carrying the virus, rather than how many have been infected for the first time? In spite of this, the daily totals have been delivered, as if they were 'hot' from the top of the mountain. Goodness knows, it will be next to impossible to make meaningful comments when 'comparing' infection rates in different countries.
