This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Taking the Weather With Us?
The Brits talk as if only they have weather. At the moment the UK is very hot and dry. France, however, is currently experiencing its 4th heatwave of 2022. These have generated the worst drought since records began (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62486386.amp). The Loire Valley has been designated 'The Garden of France'. The drought is now devastating crops in this important agricultural area. This is at a time when the Ukraine war is reducing food availability. There are also wild fires raging in many areas of SW France (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/aug/10/more-than-6000-evacuated-in-south-west-france-as-wildfires-destroy-forests). For example, a reignited wildfire has destroyed large areas of forest in the Gironde region. On a recent trip to a strangely sun-soaked Wales, one of my sons commented that the landscape was 'just like SW France'. Perhaps he mean't that Wales is becoming like SW France used to be? Climate change affects everywhere. Conditions can become too hot, even fot sun-seeking tourists.
