This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

It's Only Skin Deep?
Melanomas are one kind of dangerous skin cancer. A number of UK melanoma specialists are pointing out that increasing the number of prolonged hot spells, will inevitably result in more skin cancers (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/aug/14/hotter-summers-fuel-increase-skin-cancers-melanoma). Skin cancers are consequences of sunburn. Sunburn is produced by exposuring the body to the sun's ultra-violet (UV) radiation. UV radiation will have an impact on exposed areas of the skin. Having a fair complexion is disadvantageous. The climate crisis requires more frequent and systematic checking for dangerous skin cancers. The general population must also be reminded of the needs to:- a) limit their time spent in direct sunlight (their jobs may be a factor); b) apply appropriate protective sun creams; c) wear a hat (especially if they are follicularly challenged) and d) report any developing skin blemishes (if they can actually contact a GP).
