This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Satnav Psychopaths?
Between 1995 and 2019, the UK's urban traffic rose significantly. Traffic grew by just 1% on major roads but by 36% on minor roads. The introduction of the satnav may account for much of this increase. Satnavs signpost potential 'rat runs' through minor roads. Increased traffic here, consequently increases RTAs involving pedestrians as well as augmenting health-damaging atmospheric and noise polution etc. One response has been to introduce Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) in urban centres (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/aug/03/low-traffic-neighbourhoods-streets-drivers-violence-oxford). LTNs enable pedestrians and cyclists to reclaim the minor roads. Children can safely play in these steets. Some motorists have, however, reacted with fury to the creation of LTNs. They have destroyed bollards, sprayed planters with graffiti, used their cars to push pedestrians out of the way etc. This antisocial behaviour should not be tolerated. If it takes the motorist a little longer to get to his/her destination, that is no bad thing. LTNs give multiple benefits, especially to the poor, in UK cities.
