This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Down the Plug Hole?
The UK's drought conditions are predicted to persist until at least the end of October (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/aug/09/uk-braced-for-drought-conditions-in-october). This year, the UK's rainfall has been very sparse from July onwards. The South-east of England is especially badly hit. In this location, some of the rivers are now exceptionally low, curtailing Water Companies removing yet more of their contents. The consequences to this region's agriculture will also be 'dire'. The soil is currently too hard to drill. Drilling must be done before the end of October, in order to plant many of next year's crops. It seems very odd there has been no government response to the impending water shortage. The cost of living crisis will intensify, as many basic foods (as well as heating) will cost much more.
