This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Air Pollution Blame Game
When asked about the major contributors to air pollution (a major source of human health problems), a survey of 16000 people somewhat predictably came up with industry and vehicle emissions as being prime candidates (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jan/15/pollutionwatch-major-sources-of-air-pollution-often-overlooked). Survey respondents rarely named agriculture (where animal ammonia production, influences emissions) and home heating, as having major impacts on air quality. In fact, these last two sources of air pollution are much more important, than most people believe. Quite a lot of industrial pollution is well-regulated, in the UK, but we have hardly made any progress in limiting the impact of central heating systems from private homes on the air we breathe.
