This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Good Covid Weather For Quacks?
In fairness, it can (and does) happen in any country. Whenever there is a medical emergency, quacks and charalatans emerge from the woodwork, with 'cures'. The Covid-19 pandemic is no different but, sometimes, the quacks get a timely comeupance. In Sri Lanka, a self-styled 'holyman' produced a 'miracle', honey and nutmeg-containing syrup (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/19/sri-lankan-holy-mans-miracle-potion-for-covid-turns-sour). The 'holyman' claimed the Hindu goddess Kali had revealed the potion to him, and it would, unfailingly, cure Covid-19 infections. Thousands, of non-socially distancing people, gathered in his village, keen to get the syrup. The Minister for Women and Child Development came there and publically drank the potion on TV. Shortly afterwards, the Minister was rushed to hospital with a Covid-19 infection. QED
