This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Going Down the Coal 'Hole'!
Coal is the dirtiest of the hydrocarbons used for energy production. If the planet is to have any chance of avoiding climatic breakdown, we have to stop burning coal. This message, however, appears to be broadly ignored by coal mining firms (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/06/reckless-coal-firms-plan-climate-busting-expansion-study-finds). A thousand large coal mining companies were canvassed. More than half were developing new mines and/or building additional coal-fired power stations. A majority are in China, India and Australia. Only 27 of the 1000, have currently specified a 'coal exit date, when their mining will cease. There's not much point in leaving oil in the ground, if the coal barons are intent on expanding their activities. It's amazing how quickly the promises of Cop26 in Glasgow are forgotten.
