This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Some Vagueness on Vaping Vanishes?
Circa 67% of adult smokers in England, currently believe vaping to be as harmful or more harmful than smoking. A major review has been published of 400 published studies on nicotine product use from around the world. It confirms that vaping is actually much safer than lighting up cigarettes (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/sep/29/switch-from-smoking-to-vaping-cuts-health-risks-substantially-report-finds). The study, carried out at King's College London, shows vaping exposes its users to markedly lower concentrations of nitrosamines, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds, than actual smoking. These chemicals are highly toxic. It's been long-established that they cause cancers, as well as other lung and cardiovascular ('heart') disease. The report's authors strongly advocate UK health authorities urging 'hooked' smokers to switch to vaping. They also point out, however, that vaping is not without risk. They say that non-smokers would be well-advised to take up neither habit. The targeting of flavoured vapes to children on social media is conseqently a very worrying development.
