This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

The 'Ungreening' of UK Government
In Glasgow's Cop26, the UK assumed Presidency of the United Nations climate talks. In spite of the myriad of difficulties, a fragile coalition of developed and developing countries was built to attempt to limit the worst effects of the accelerating climate crisis. As Cop27 approaches in Cairo, the UK seems keen to end its Presidency as a maverick rather than a role-model (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/07/uk-risks-ending-cop26-presidency-disarray-truss-climate-policy-undermine-global-consensus). Many recent extreme weather events, in diverse parts of the world, have only reiterated the urgent need to reduce 'greenhouse gas' emissions. The UK's Business Secretary is, however, a climate change denier. He wants to encourage both fracking and increased extraction of oil and gas from the North Sea. The UK's new Prime Minister, in her Party Conference speech, described environmental groups as part of an 'anti-growth coalition'. It looks as if the UK is intent on vacating the moral high-ground, threatening the global concensus on the climate threat. How quickly you can go from saint to sinner!
