This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

I Didn't Know I was Permanently in 'Goblin Mode'
'Goblin mode' has been selected, by a first public vote, as the New Oxford dictionary 'word' of the year for 2022. It easily beat 'Metaverse' into second place (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2022/dec/05/goblin-mode-new-oxford-word-of-the-year). 'Goblin mode' apparently means 'a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, greedy, typical in a way that rejects social norms or expectations'. I have never heard the phrase before (led a sheltered life) but it sounds about right, as a description of my normal modus operandi.
