This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Pulverising Poultry
World-wide, the current outbreak of bird 'flu may have resulted, since last October, in 140 million farmed birds being culled. Farmed birds notably include chickens, geese and turkeys (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/dec/09/avian-flu-has-led-to-the-killing-of-140m-farmed-birds-since-last-october). Forty-eight million poultry have been killed in Europe along with 53 million in the US. It's actually quite difficult to get accurate figures for some parts of the world. The costs, however, have been 'astronomical'. Some specialists now argue that such culling is not sustainable. They think alternatives, like vaccination, should be used much more widely.
