This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

'Cause Everybody Hates a Tourist (Especially One Who Thinks It's All Such a Laugh)
A Bristol-based tourist was videoed, carving his name and that of his girlfriend into the walls of Rome's colosseum. As one might expect, the clip, with an uncomplimentary label, went viral. That tourist now claims he didn't realise the building was so old (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/05/english-tourist-accused-of-carving-name-in-colosseum-says-he-did-not-realise-its-age). After being traced, the tourist wrote (or had written for him) a letter of contrition to the Italian authorities. Could it be, he now appreciates he's facing a substantial fine and/or a possible prison sentence? How old did he think the Roman artefact was? Would it even have been appropriate to deface the building, if it were newer? Bloody tourists!
