This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Plot Boilers?
Heat pumps are much more environmentally efficient than a more traditional gas boiler. Some what predictably, the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA), which represents boiler manufacturers, have been secretly lobbying the UK government to delay a scheme to boost the uptake of heat pumps (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jul/20/gas-boiler-lobby-uk-heat-pump-plans-leak). The EUA advocates the government scheme (financial inducements) to start in 2026 rather than 2024. This would give boiler manufactuers more time to develop alternatives burning hydrogen. Natural gas generates carbon dioxide, whereas burning hydrogen produces water. This might be of some benefit. The precise benefit, however, depends on whether 'blue' (from oil or gas) or 'green' (produced by splitting water molecules) hydrogen is used. Either way, a heat pump is a more efficient way of heating a home. There's also a need to slash 'greenhouse gas' emissions NOW! Do they never consider the heat records being broken across the globe?
